Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback in which the subject’s brain activity is measured and displayed on an EEG (Electroencephalogram) monitor. This shows how much electrical energy their brains are producing at any given moment, and they can use this feedback to achieve specific tasks or behaviors. Using neurofeedback, epileptic children have improved cognitive function while improving hippocampal brain structure.

Neurofeedback is a type of therapy that uses technology to help patients with epilepsy. It helps to train the brain and body in order to reduce seizures, improve focus, and even improve sleep quality. Read more in detail here: neurofeedback therapy.

Epilepsy and Neurofeedback

Epilepsy is a well-known neurological condition with a long history. It is referenced in the Bible and in the works of Plutarch, a Greek historian. Even farther back in time, a Babylonian medical treatise discusses many types of epilepsy, ranging from mild to severe. Even the Egyptians recognized that brain trauma might induce epilepsy, with one text describing a relationship between a man’s head wound and his epileptic convulsions.

Despite the fact that ancient physicians recognized epilepsy as an illness, their remedies were woefully ineffectual. Pharmaceuticals are now the most common therapy for epileptic seizures, although they have limited advantages for certain people and may have serious adverse effects. Behavioral therapy, on the other hand, show a lot of promise for lowering epileptic seizures and providing patients more control over their condition. Neurofeedback training is one of these extra treatments.

For example, the journal Current Opinion in Neurology published a review study in April of 2019 that concluded:

Behavioral therapy for epilepsy are effective and are largely underused. … Appropriately selected behavioral treatments tend to be significant adjuncts to regular therapy for motivated and engaged individuals.

Seizure control was documented using cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, self-management, yoga, music therapy, and bio- or neurofeedback, according to this study.

Similarly, a study of all research on the use of neurofeedback for epilepsy conducted between 1970 and 2005 indicated that 74 percent of patients experienced fewer weekly seizures as a consequence of neurofeedback treatment. The fact that all of these individuals were non-responsive to various types of medical therapy is an essential component of this study. Researchers at a Veterans Affairs facility came to the following conclusion:

EEG operant training was shown to generate a substantial decrease in seizure frequency in this meta-analysis. This conclusion is particularly notable in light of the patient population, which included people who had been unable to manage their seizures despite medical therapy.
